Don’t Let Your Trees Die of Thirst: Smart Watering Tips During Drought In Southern Alberta, water conservation is top of mind for many homeowners — and rightfully so. But while reducing lawn watering may seem like a responsible step, it’s leading to an unintended consequence: stressed, declining, and even dying trees. Unlike grass, trees don’t bounce back after a drought. Lawns can go dormant and turn green again when the rains return. Trees, on the other hand, suffer long-term damage — and some never recover. At Timberline Arborists, we’re seeing more and more trees in trouble due to underwatering. Here’s how you can be water-wise without sacrificing your trees’ health. βΈ» Why Trees Need More Than Just a Little Rain Trees have deep root systems and large canopies, which means they need consistent moisture — especially during hot, dry stretches. Young trees are especially vulnerable, but even mature trees can decline quickly if they don’t get enough water. βΈ» 4 Smart Ways to Keep Your Trees Hydrated While Conserving Water 1. Prioritize Trees Over Grass If you need to cut back on watering, skip the lawn — not the trees. Replacing a lawn is easy and inexpensive. Replacing a mature tree can cost thousands of dollars and years of lost shade, privacy, and curb appeal. 2. Deep Water, Less Often Instead of shallow, frequent watering, give your trees a slow, deep soak once a week. Let the water penetrate at least 12–18 inches into the soil. Soaker hoses or drip irrigation are perfect for this. 3. Water the “Drip Zone” Aim to water under the outermost branches (not just near the trunk). This is where the absorbing roots live and where water is needed most. 4. Mulch to Retain Moisture Apply a 2–4 inch layer of mulch around the base of the tree — keeping it a few inches away from the trunk. Mulch helps soil stay cool and moist longer, reducing evaporation and weed competition.

What’s curling my elm leaves? Meet the elm leafcurl aphid (Eriosoma americanum) — tiny pests causing big distortions! These aphids feed inside newly emerged elm leaves, triggering tight curling, blistering, and that telltale purplish swelling. By the time you see damage, colonies are already well established and protected inside the leaf. What you’re seeing here: - Dense aphid colonies - Waxy exuviae (shed skins) - Early signs of honeydew buildup What I recommend for treatment: 1. Promote tree health such as water, mulch, no excess nitrogen 2. Avoid broad spectrum insecticides that kill natural predators like ladybugs 3. For high-value urban trees: TreeAzin injections — now is the perfect window for systemic treatment Not all pests need to be sprayed — smart timing, healthy trees, and the right tools can make all the difference. #ArboristLife #IPM #ElmAphid #TreeHealth #UrbanForestry #SouthernAlbertaTrees #TreeAzin #PestID #PlantHealthCare #yqltrees

πŸ” What’s inside these rolled-up ash leaves? If you unroll one and find little brown “coffee grounds,” you’ve likely found the work of the ash leaf cone roller—a tiny caterpillar that rolls leaves to feed and hide. While the damage is mostly cosmetic, a heavy infestation year after year can stress your tree. If your ash is looking rough, we can help identify the issue and recommend the right treatment—whether that’s a targeted spray or a deep root feeding to boost its health. πŸ“ Serving Lethbridge and area | Certified Arborist πŸ“ž Call or DM to book your tree checkup #AshTree #TreePests #LethbridgeTrees #Arborist #TreeHealth #YQL #AshLeafConeRoller #TreeCare

Ever seen fine webbing on spruce needles? It’s not from spiders — it’s actually one of the first visible signs of spider mites, a tiny pest that feeds on needle tissue and can severely weaken the tree over time. Early damage looks like yellow stippling or dull needles. If left untreated, the tree can suffer dieback, needle drop, or even death in severe infestations. The good news? Spider mites are manageable when caught early — and that’s exactly what this post is for. We’re seeing signs in the Lethbridge area already, so now’s the time for inspections and proactive treatment. #SpiderMites #TreeCareTips #SpruceTreeHealth #PlantHealthCare #TimberlineArborists #LethbridgeTrees
