Prioritize Trees Over Grass If you need to cut back on watering, skip the lawn — not the trees. Replacing a lawn is easy and inexpensive. Replacing a mature tree can cost thousands of dollars and years of lost shade, privacy, and curb appeal. 2. Deep Water, Less Often Instead of shallow, frequent watering, give your trees a slow, deep soak once a week. Let the water penetrate at least 12–18 inches into the soil.
